LIRA, UGANDA — The stage is set for a major political and thanksgiving celebration in Lira District, with the Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, confirmed as the chief guest for an event hosted by the Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Hon. Sam Engola.
Moses Odunu, the councilor for Amach Sub County, announced the details on behalf of the Minister, confirming that the thanksgiving ceremony will take place on July 18, 2026, at Olilo Primary School in Itek Sub County. Odunu stated that Minister Engola is organizing the event to express gratitude to the voters of Erute South and to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his reappointment as a Minister .
A Gathering of National Leaders
Odunu revealed that the celebration is expected to draw high-ranking government officials, with Prime Minister Nabbanja leading the list of guests. She will be joined by the Minister for Local Government, Balaam Barugahara .
However, beyond the festivities, Odunu emphasized that the function will serve as a crucial platform for lobbying for the development of the region. He rallied residents to attend in large numbers, explaining that the presence of the ministers presents a unique opportunity to secure funding.
"We want to ask the ministers to put some money in the new financial year for Erute district so that they can get the district," Odunu stated, highlighting a key agenda item for the gathering.
The creation of Erute District has been a long-standing priority for leaders in the area. According to previous reports, President Museveni has already approved the creation of the new district to resolve long-standing administrative boundary disputes between Lira City and Lira District . The push to ensure its operationalization is now shifting focus to budget allocation.
Moses Otim, the Speaker of Lira District Local Government, echoed Odunu's sentiments. He confirmed that he and other district leaders will present a formal proposal to the ministers requesting the inclusion of funds for Erute District in the upcoming national budget.
Otim expressed confidence that the government can fast-track the creation of the district once the financial resources are allocated . The event is expected to serve as a high-stakes meeting ground for regional development and political unity.
