Kampala, Uganda – The Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Sam Engola, has hosted a high-level delegation from the Uganda Red Cross Society, led by Secretary General Robert Kwesiga, to reinforce the country's strategy for managing emergencies and supporting vulnerable populations.
The meeting centered on a comprehensive review of the nation's humanitarian architecture, with a specific focus on enhancing coordination between the government and the Red Cross. "Our discussions centered on strengthening our collaboration to enhance disaster preparedness, response, and refugee support across Uganda," Minister Engola stated following the talks.
A significant portion of the dialogue was dedicated to financial coordination and the localization of humanitarian aid—a strategy aimed at ensuring resources and decision-making are more effectively channeled to local actors on the front lines of crises. The Minister commended the Red Cross for its pivotal role in delivering life-saving assistance and acknowledged the challenges posed by pressing food security concerns.
Both parties emphasized the necessity of robust monitoring and accountability mechanisms to ensure the efficiency and transparency of joint efforts. "I commend the Uganda Red Cross for their unwavering commitment to our nation," Engola added. "I look forward to deepening our partnership as we work hand-in-hand to build a more resilient Uganda."
Robert Kwesiga, the Secretary General, reaffirmed the Red Cross's dedication to supporting the government's mandate, particularly in improving response times and reaching communities often left behind. The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to pursue stronger operational frameworks ahead of the anticipated rainy seasons.
