Over 100 Suspects Nabbed as Police Crush Crime Ring in Lira-City East Division

LIRA, Uganda – April 22, 2026 – In a decisive response to escalating criminal activities including motorcycle robberies, burglaries, rape, and other thuggery, the territorial Police in Lira-City East Division have apprehended over 100 suspects in an overnight intelligence-led operation.


The crackdown, commanded personally by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Lira-City East Division, took place on the night of April 21, 2026, targeting the volatile hotspots of Boke and Agwetagwet areas.


All suspects are currently detained in police custody as investigations intensify.

During the operation, security personnel recovered a significant cache of exhibits from the suspects, including:Pangas (machetes),Housebreaking implements and Master keys specifically designed to open padlocks

Authorities have already preferred charges of Possessing Housebreaking Implements against the suspects

Confirming the development, the Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema (PJ Okema), said the operation is part of a broader strategy aimed at reducing crime in the affected areas.

"This is an operation which is intended to reduce crimes in the areas," SP Okema stated.


He further disclosed that the police are yet to conduct a public screening of the suspects, which will be done with full support from the local leadership. Following the screening, case files will be compiled and submitted to the Resident State Attorney (RCSA) for perusal and legal guidance.

SP Okema used the opportunity to rally public support in the ongoing fight against crime.


"We urge members of the public for a continued collaboration with security to curb down crimes," he said.


Residents of Boke and Agwetagwet have welcomed the operation, expressing hope that it will restore sanity in their communities. The public will be notified of the date and venue for the screening exercise in due course.
