Erute North— Retired Major Emmy Johnson Opio, now vying for the Member of Parliament seat for Erute North on the NRM ticket, has delivered a bold message about political leadership, categorizing politicians into three groups: those seeking jobs, those looking for investment opportunities, and those who serve to leave a legacy.
Speaking on the Yite Twolo morning talk-back show on Friday, Opio aligned himself with the third group—leaders driven by service and long-term impact. He cited high-ranking public officials such as Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development Betty Amongi, Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Kole North MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, and Dokolo South MP Felix Okot Ogong as examples of leaders motivated by legacy.
“We are not in politics to look for jobs or to invest for personal gain. We are here to serve our people and leave a lasting legacy,” Opio stated firmly.Opio, who is also spearheading a large-scale cocoa-growing initiative in Lango, emphasized agriculture as a pathway to economic empowerment. During the show, he named district coordinators who will oversee the distribution and multiplication of cocoa seedlings across the region. He revealed an ambitious plan to distribute 1.6 million cocoa seedlings in 2026, with the aim of generating Shs145 billion per harvest season in the Lango sub-region—a move he believes could significantly transform the local economy.
“Cocoa is not just a crop, it is a game-changer. If we do this right, Lango will become an economic powerhouse,” he added.
As the 2026 general elections approach, Opio’s dual focus on integrity in leadership and economic transformation through agriculture could resonate strongly with voters seeking meaningful change.
