LIRA, Uganda – June 20, 2026 – At least 20 amputees from the Lango Sub-region have received prosthetic limbs, marking a significant step toward restoring their mobility, dignity, and independence.
The life-changing intervention is the result of a collaborative initiative between the Suman Foundation and the Orthopedic Department of Lira Regional Referral Hospital. The prosthetic limbs were carefully fitted and calibrated by the hospital’s specialist team under the leadership of Raphael Omodi before being officially handed over to the beneficiaries during a ceremony held on Friday, June 20, 2026.
The recipients include individuals who lost their limbs due to road traffic accidents, workplace injuries, and medical amputations resulting from conditions such as diabetes and severe infections. For many, the new limbs represent not just a physical restoration but a psychological renewal.
“We are grateful for the collaboration and commitment demonstrated by Lira Regional Referral Hospital. Through this partnership, we have been able to reach individuals whose lives can be transformed through access to prosthetic care,” said Venkatesh Manepali, Manager of Suman Foundation, during the handover ceremony. “Our goal is to restore hope, mobility, and opportunity to those living with disabilities.”
Representing the Hospital Director, Emmanuel Ogwang, the Hospital Administrator praised the Suman Foundation for its continued support.
“Lira Regional Referral Hospital remains committed to working with development partners, charitable organizations, and other stakeholders to expand access to quality healthcare services,” Ogwang noted. “We appreciate Suman Foundation for choosing to support our patients and communities through this life-changing intervention.”
Overwhelmed with emotion, the beneficiaries expressed heartfelt gratitude to both organizations. They noted that the prosthetic limbs will not only improve their physical mobility but also restore their confidence and enable them to re-engage in social and economic activities, empowering them to rebuild their lives with greater autonomy.
The initiative underscores a growing focus on inclusive healthcare in the region, ensuring that persons with disabilities are not left behind in the pursuit of sustainable development and community well-being.
