LIRA CITY, UGANDA – The State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction at the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City, revealing that the works are now at 45 percent completion and running ahead of schedule.

The Minister conducted a routine inspection of the facility yesterday , accompanied by consultants from the Ministry of Works and Transport. The stadium, which was officially commissioned by President Yoweri Museveni in January last year, is being constructed by SAMCO National Construction Company.

"I embarked on my routine inspection of the ongoing works of Akii Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City. I was accompanied by the consultant from the Ministry of Works and Transport, and I would like to report that the works, which were officially commissioned by the President in January last year, are progressing very well at 45 percent ahead of schedule," Ogwang stated.

The Minister further noted that the contractor has demonstrated strong commitment to delivering the facility within the revised timeline. According to Ogwang, SAMCO National Construction Company is confident of completing the stadium by October this year.

Once completed, the Akii Bua Olympic Stadium is expected to serve as a major sports hub for the Lira City and the wider northern region, hosting football matches, athletics events, and other sporting activities. The facility is named after the legendary Ugandan athlete John Akii Bua, who won gold in the 400-meter hurdles at the 1972 Munich Olympics.

The project is part of the government's broader initiative to develop sports infrastructure across the country, aimed at nurturing talent and positioning Uganda as a competitive force in regional and international sports.
