Kampala, Uganda – Comrades, Pan-Africanists, and the wider East African Community have been called to prayer and reflection as Mama Miria Kalule Obote, one of the last surviving Founding Mothers of the East African Community (EAC), celebrates her 90th birthday.

Dr. Tendo Ronex Kisembo, CEO of Africa Mashariki Fest, issued a heartfelt appeal to the public to join him in honoring the matriarch. In a moving tribute, Dr. Kisembo celebrated Mama Miria’s life, acknowledging her pivotal role in the region's history and her continued relevance in guiding the future of the bloc.
"Mungu ni mwema wakati wowote," Dr. Kisembo remarked, expressing gratitude to the Almighty for granting Mama Miria the grace to witness nine decades of life. "Tunashukuru Mola kwa kuwezesha Maama Miria kutimiza umri wa miaka 90 duniani."
In his address, Dr. Kisembo emphasized the importance of heeding the wisdom of the continent's elders. He noted that the current generation often suffers from the illusion of knowing everything, but true progress lies in "emptying" the cup of pride to learn from those who walked the path before.
"By 'Emptying' a bit of our supposedly 'Full cups' to listen to our elders, we assuredly can avoid costly mistakes and gain valuable/profound insights into personal growth, relationships, and emotional maturity," Dr. Kisembo stated. "Let that sink in."
He urged the youth and leaders alike to focus on the intergenerational dialogue that is necessary for the success of the EAC. Mama Miria, as a widow of former Ugandan President Milton Obote and a veteran politician in her own right, represents the historical bridge between the region's tumultuous past and its current aspirations for integration.
As the celebrations commence, Dr. Kisembo concluded his tribute with a fervent prayer for the nonagenarian. He implored the Merciful God to continue protecting her, granting her good health, long life, and happiness.
"Zetu Dua kwake Mwenyezi Mungu mwingi wa rehema nikwamba, aziidi kumulinda na kumjalia afya njema na maisha marefu yenye furaha na hekima ili akaweze kushuhudia mtangamano wa jumuiya yetu," he prayed, expressing his hope that she would live to witness the full realization of the East African unity she helped to foster.
Mama Miria Kalule Obote’s 90th birthday serves not only as a celebration of a life well-lived but also as a reminder of the resilience required to build a united Africa.
