Apac District Authorities Impound Tractor, Arrest Three in Major Wetland Crackdown

Apac, Uganda – July 16, 2026 – In a decisive move to protect the region’s diminishing natural resources, the Apac District Local Government has conducted a major joint enforcement operation, resulting in the arrest of three suspects and the impounding of heavy machinery used in environmental degradation.

The operation, carried out on July 15th by the District Environment Officer and Forestry Officer, specifically targeted two critical ecological hotspots: the Kigera Wetland in Jinery Cell, Alenga Ward, Ibuje Town Council, and illegal charcoal burning sites in Kamuli Village along the shores of Lake Kwania in Ayeolyec Parish, Akokoro Sub-County.

During the raid, enforcement officers impounded a tractor that was actively being used to reclaim and degrade the protected wetland. Additionally, authorities seized several bags of charcoal alongside a cache of tools, including pangas, hoes, and axes, which were being utilized for unauthorized tree felling and clearing of protected areas.

The three arrested individuals are currently in custody and will face legal proceedings under Uganda’s environmental and forestry protection laws. The charges are expected to carry significant penalties as the government ramps up efforts to combat ecological crimes.

Speaking about the operation, Apac District officials reiterated that wetland encroachment and illegal charcoal burning pose a severe threat to local livelihoods, contributing to flooding, loss of biodiversity, and the drying up of water sources.

“We are sending a clear message that these illegal activities will not be tolerated,” stated a representative of the District Environment Office. “The destruction of Kigera Wetland and the shores of Lake Kwania undermines the future of our communities. These enforcement operations are not a one-off event; they will be continuous and aggressive.”

The District Local Government has urged residents to report any suspicious activities related to environmental degradation and reminded the public that the protection of natural resources is a collective responsibility.
