LIRA CITY – The Territorial Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a tragic road traffic crash that claimed one life and left another rider critically injured on the Lira–Aduku Highway Wednesday afternoon.
According to a statement from North Kyoga Region PRO SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident occurred at approximately 2:30 pm on 11th February 2026 at Anai Check Point, near a newly constructed petrol station.
Preliminary investigations indicate that motor vehicle registration number UBG 511C, a white Toyota Mark X, was travelling from Aduku towards Lira City. The driver attempted to overtake a silver Nissan Terra registration number UBM 306D, which was ahead in the same lane. In the process of overtaking carelessly, the Mark X knocked the Nissan Terra on the driver's side, lost control, and veered into oncoming traffic.
The out-of-control vehicle then rammed into two oncoming motorcycles travelling from Lira City towards Aduku.
One of the motorcycles, a red Bajaj Boxer registration UEF 888A, was ridden by an unidentified adult male who sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Lira Regional Referral Hospital. His condition remains unestablished.
The second motorcycle, also a red Bajaj Boxer registration UDP 228C, was ridden by Ocen Edward, 50, a peasant farmer and resident of Akot A Village, Alira Parish, Aduku Sub-county, Kwania District. Mr Ocen was rushed to the hospital's emergency unit but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
"The scene was immediately visited and documented by Cpl Ogwok Denis, supported by the police patrol team and other uniformed officers from Lira City West Police Station," SP Okema confirmed.
All involved motor vehicles and motorcycles have been towed to Lira City West Police Station yard pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). A case of Serious Road Traffic Crash Turned Fatal has been registered as inquiries continue.
SP Okema described the incident as deeply unfortunate and issued an urgent appeal to all road users.
"We appeal to drivers and other road users to observe the road safety rules and regulations," he said. "One wrong manoeuvre—a careless overtake—has here resulted in a family losing a father and another rider fighting for his life."
Efforts to trace the relatives of the unidentified injured rider are ongoing.
