Lira, Uganda – In a major political shift, Daniel Okello, the outspoken Speaker of Lira City West Division, is set to defect from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) to the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), a reliable source has revealed.
According to an insider who spoke on condition of anonymity, Okello’s decision stems from growing tensions with NRM leaders over his relentless anti-corruption campaigns in Lira City. His vocal stance against graft has reportedly angered some high-ranking officials, leading to political isolation and pressure.
“He has been a thorn in the flesh of corrupt leaders, and they want him out," the source disclosed. “Instead of being appreciated for fighting corruption, he has faced hostility, including two failed impeachment attempts."
The source further revealed that a powerful figure within UPC has been supporting Okello through his political struggles, which may have influenced his decision to switch allegiance.
If confirmed, Okello’s defection would be a significant gain for UPC, which has been working to regain its foothold in the Lango sub-region. His move could inspire other disgruntled NRM members to follow suit.
Efforts to get a comment from Okello were unsuccessful by press time, but political analysts suggest his crossover could shake up local politics ahead of the 2026 elections.
NRM officials in Lira City remained tight-lipped, while UPC leaders are reportedly preparing to welcome their newest member with a major rally in the coming days.
