7 Teachers Get One Year Jail Term for PLE Malpractice in Kassanda

Mengo, Uganda – The Chief Magistrate at Mwanga II Mengo Chief Magistrate's Court, His Worship Adams Byarugaba, yesterday sentenced seven teachers to one year in prison after they were found guilty of involvement in examination malpractice during the 2025 Primary Leaving Examination (PLE).

The convicted teachers were part of a larger racket that operated in Kassanda District, which became the epicenter of PLE cheating last year. According to court records, the group conspired to access, cut, and share examination materials electronically before the officially approved starting time.

The case has also implicated the Director of Nkoba Primary School, who allegedly worked hand-in-hand with the District Inspector of Kassanda to orchestrate the illegal distribution of exam papers.

Delivering the custodial sentence, Magistrate Byarugaba emphasized the need to protect the integrity of the national examination system, noting that the actions of the educators betrayed public trust and disadvantaged innocent learners.

Yesterday’s conviction brings the total number of people found guilty in the Kassanda examination fraud case to 15 out of the 30 originally accused. The court is set to continue hearing the remaining cases involving the other 15 suspects, including the school director and the district inspector, who face additional charges related to the organized cheating scheme.

The prosecution hailed the sentence as a strong deterrent, while defense lawyers indicated they were studying the ruling for a possible appeal.
