Alebtong Deputy RDC Mathius Lutwama Leads Reafforestation Program in Alebtong District to Combat Environmental Degradation

Alebtong District has officially launched a large-scale reafforestation campaign aimed at addressing the growing challenge of environmental degradation, a concern increasingly affecting communities across the region.

Speaking at the launch, Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mathius Lutwama emphasized that environmental destruction remains one of the key challenges impacting humanity today. He noted that the initiative is a proactive step toward restoring ecological balance and securing a healthier future for generations to come.

The campaign has begun with the distribution of 20,000 pine tree seedlings to local residents, encouraging widespread community participation in tree planting efforts. Lutwama highlighted that Alebtong is home to seven forest reserves, and the district is committed to restoring and protecting these vital natural resources.

The reafforestation drive has already commenced in Teiconga Forest Reserve located in Aloi Town Council, covering approximately 20 acres of land. Another site, Teiponga Forest in Akura, spans about 10 acres and is also part of the ongoing restoration effort.

According to district leaders, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, with residents actively participating in planting and nurturing the seedlings.

Lutwama underscored the importance of trees in sustaining life, noting that they play a critical role in oxygen production and environmental conservation. He added that pine trees, in particular, are valuable for scientific and ecological recovery.

The initiative also aligns with national efforts to promote environmental security, in response to directives issued by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni. Leaders in Alebtong say the campaign represents a significant step toward fulfilling this national agenda while empowering local communities to take ownership of environmental protection.

The district has pledged to continue expanding the program to cover more areas, ensuring long-term sustainability and environmental resilience.
