LIRA, UGANDA – In a significant boost for healthcare education in Northern Uganda, Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery in Lira City has been recognized as the leading health training institution in the region, thanks to a massive upgrade in its practical training equipment.
The institution has distinguished itself by moving beyond traditional chalk-and-talk teaching methods, investing heavily in modern simulation labs and clinical tools that allow students to master procedures before they ever step into a public ward.
According to the school’s administration, this focus on "most improved practicals" has directly translated into better performance in national examinations and clinical placements.
Speaking to journalists at the Lira City campus, the Director of Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr. Isaac Orec, attributed the school’s rise to the top to its commitment to producing competent, job-ready graduates.
"Our students have always been the top performers in practical assessments because we refuse to train them using outdated methods," said Dr. Orec. "We are not just teaching students to pass exams; we are producing quality health workers who will be leaders in the health sector. A nurse trained with modern equipment is confident, accurate, and saves lives."
Dr. Orec emphasized that the new equipment bridges the gap between theory and practice. Students now train on high-fidelity mannequins that simulate real patient responses, advanced diagnostic tools, and modern maternity simulators for midwifery students. This hands-on experience ensures that graduates are familiar with the technology they will find in top hospitals.
The upgrade has positioned Victoria School of Nursing and Midwifery as a hub for excellence in the region. Administrators note that health facilities across Uganda are increasingly seeking out their graduates due to their superior practical skills and leadership qualities.
"Health emergencies do not wait for theory to catch up," Dr. Orec added. "By investing in our practical labs, we are investing in the safety of Ugandan patients. We are proud that our alumni are now leading teams in various health centers, saving lives with the skills they honed right here in Lira City."
With this recognition, the school plans to continue expanding its facilities to maintain its status as the gold standard for nursing and midwifery training in the country.
