Kyegegwa, Uganda – May 17, 2025
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on leaders in the Tooro sub-region to shift their focus from what he termed “secondary issues” and instead prioritise wealth creation at the household level as the cornerstone for eradicating poverty across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with regional leaders this afternoon in Kyegegwa District, President Museveni emphasised that while infrastructure development remains important, the true transformation of livelihoods must begin with increasing household incomes.
“The most effective way to defeat poverty is to boost wealth at the household level. Infrastructure is vital, yes, but wealth creation will reach every home if all leaders take it seriously,” President Museveni said.
He highlighted the success of this approach in the cattle corridor areas, where he previously championed grassroots economic transformation through wealth creation programs.
“We, the freedom fighters, brought peace to this country. Even if there are still some infrastructure challenges, peace has been established. Now, what must follow is serious mobilisation for income-generating activities at the household level,” he added.
The President’s message comes as the government continues to roll out initiatives under the Parish Development Model and Emyooga program, both aimed at uplifting families from subsistence to commercial production.
President Museveni is expected to expound further on the wealth creation agenda during a public rally scheduled for tomorrow in the same district.
