Addis Ababa, Ethiopia-H.E. Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, welcomed the UNHCR Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) for discussions focused on refugee protection, regional cooperation, and sustainable solutions to displacement across Africa.
The meeting provided an opportunity to reflect on Uganda’s longstanding commitment to hosting and supporting refugees, a policy approach that has earned international recognition for promoting inclusion, self-reliance, and human dignity.
During the engagement, the UNHCR Representative praised Uganda’s progressive refugee framework, noting its strong alignment with the aspirations of the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and ongoing efforts to advance durable solutions for displaced populations throughout the continent.
The discussions explored the evolving displacement landscape in Africa and underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships among governments, regional institutions, development actors, and humanitarian organizations. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that refugees have access to opportunities that enable them to rebuild their lives while contributing positively to their host communities.
Ambassador Otengo reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to working closely with the African Union, UNHCR, and other stakeholders to address the root causes of displacement and promote peace, stability, and development across the region.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of adopting comprehensive approaches that integrate humanitarian assistance with long-term development strategies, ensuring that both refugees and host communities can thrive together.
As Africa continues to navigate complex humanitarian challenges, the engagement served as a testament to the shared determination of Uganda and its partners to advance practical, people-centered solutions that uphold the rights and dignity of displaced persons.
