“Here I Am”: Maj. Opio Announces Erute North MP Bid, Promises Continued Coffee and Cocoa Support

Lira, Uganda – Major (Retired) Emmy Johnson Opio has officially declared his interest in contesting for the Erute North parliamentary seat, promising to combine political leadership with his ongoing efforts to transform the local agricultural sector.

Addressing residents, Opio stated, “Home people of Erute North, here I am—ready to represent you in the next Parliament.” He emphasized, however, that his parliamentary ambitions would not distract him from his mission of promoting coffee and cocoa farming in the region.

Opio, a retired military officer turned agripreneur and community mobilizer, is widely recognized for his generosity and grassroots impact. His agricultural initiative, which aims to boost household incomes and create sustainable livelihoods, continues to gain momentum.

“As I talk, we have more than 50,000 coffee and cocoa seedlings ready for distribution within the next two weeks,” he revealed. “And we are planning a final consignment of 30,000 seedlings this August. This is not just a promise—this is action.”

Local observers see Opio as a strong contender and a likely flag bearer for the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in Erute North, given his visible development work and community engagement.

“Leadership must be practical. It’s not just about making laws but improving lives,” Opio added.

Residents in the constituency have welcomed his announcement, citing his hands-on approach and consistent presence in the area. As the 2026 elections draw nearer, Opio’s candidacy is expected to reshape the political landscape in Erute North.
